To further understand the earthquake of 1906, the Governor of California, George Pardee, organized an inquiry committee, known as the State Earthquake Investigation Commission. It was decided that the committee should investigate the origin, the position, and the character of the disturbance in the earth's crust which gave rise to the earthquake(Preliminary Report of the State Earthquake). These answers were to be found through the locations of fault scarps and other deformations in affected areas and gathering time and intensity records. The data was collected mainly through field study, but answers from surveys put out from the commission were also used(Report of the State Earthquake Investigation Commisson).
The Three Sub-Committees:
Committee On Coseismals:
Chairman: Professor A.O. Leuschner 1. "To collect time records, with special reference to the construction of coseismals" 2."To investigate also the duration of the shock, its composition, the directions of particle movement, associated sounds, etc." (State Earthquake Investigation Commission: Meeting Minutes, April 24, 1906) |
|
Committee On Isoseismals:
Chairman: Professor A.C. Lawson 1."To make and collect observations on intensity, with special reference to the construction of isoseismals" 2."To investigate the relations of types of manifestation and characters of transmitting formations." 3."To seek for evidence of associated physiographic changes, 'Tidal waves', etc." (State Earthquake Investigation Commission: Meeting Minutes, April 24, 1906) |
Committee On Geophysics:
Chairman: Professor H.F. Reid Definition:The physics of the earth and its environment, including the physics of fields such as meteorology, oceanography, and seismology(Oxford English Dictionary). |
